Day 1. North Cappadocia Tour (Red Tour)

Once you’ve freshen up, we will start visiting sites with Uchisar Castle. This unique and fascinating castle is located at the highest point in Cappadocia and it consists of numerous rooms carved out in the rocks and connected with secret passages, stairs and tunnels. Most of the rooms on the norths side are used as dovecots or pigeon houses and they host hundreds of pigeons. Farmers use to collect droppings of these lovely birds, because their droppings are a terrific fertilizer for vineyards and orchards.

Afterwards, we will visit the Goreme Open Air Museum. This fantastic and breathtaking site contains some of the most amazing rock-cut churches, and once inside, you will be able to feast your eyes on gorgeous and surprisingly well-preserved frescoes (wall paintings). The Goreme Open Air Museum is protected by UNESCO since 1984, and it was one of the first two sites in Turkey which were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Some of the beautiful churches you will be able to see include St. Barbara Church, Apple (Elmali) Church, Snake (Yilanli) Church and more, as well as the astonishingly beautiful Nunnery.

Cavusin Old Greek Village is very rare destination on Cappadocia tours, but we’ve decided to include it in our itinerary as it has some lovely places that could get you better acquainted to history of this great country. We will visit the church of Saint John the Baptist, located in the old village part. This church is very large compared to other Cappadocian cave churches, and it used to be one big space, but it was made into three rooms once the supporting columns were straightened by building them into walls. You will also be able to witness the all-encompassing view of the old town, and Rose and Red valleys.

Pasabag (Monkey’s Valley) is next on our list of destinations. This marvelous valley contains some of the most outstanding fairy chimneys in Cappadocia with double and triple rock caps. These unique chimneys are called mushroom shaped fairy chimneys. Apart from these wonderful chimneys we will also have the chance to visit the astounding chapel dedicated to St. Simeon, as well as a hermit’s shelter built intone of the chimneys with three caps. After all this interesting sightseeing, you’re bound to get hungry, so we’ve arranged a delicious lunch to be served once our visit to Pasabag ends.

Afterwards,we will visit the small town of Avanos, known for its red clay products made by the locals. They use the unusual and high quality red clay which lies on the banks on nearby Kizilirmak, or Red River. Hundreds of village men are highly skilled in making pottery objects such as wine holders, plates, pots, ashtrays and chess sets. You will have the pleasure to witness firsthand one of these pottery masters at work. This is truly a unique experience and tourists usually feel like they took a sneak peek into another era. We will also visit Devrent Valley which is just a ten-minute drive away from Goreme. Devrent Valley doesn’t have the magnificent cave churches, but it is a magnificent landscape on its own. This amazing lunar landscape I s known all over the world for its strange look. Many different rock formations make it look like moonscape, and you will be able to see and take pictures of this amazing and miraculous natural wonder.

Next, we will pay a short visit to Urgup to see its amazing fairy chimneys, somewhat larger than others, and afterwards we will stop by a local carpet factory in Goreme. Turkish carpets and kilims are known throughout the world for its beauty and sustainability, and here you will het an insight on how they are made and what makes them so special.

Our wonderful tour through North Cappadocia ends at around 5pm, with a drop back to Cappadocia Inn Hotel, where you can enjoy your free time and take a rest of the day off.

Day 2. South Cappadocia Tour (Green Tour)

After a refreshing night of sleep and delicious breakfast at the hotel, we will resume our tour at 9.30am. Our driver will pick you up from the hotel and take you for a comfortable drive.

During the snug and comfyride, you will be able to fully enjoy the charming Goreme panorama. Once we reach Derin kuyu, we will continue our tour on foot. You will be able to witness some of the most fascinating remains of ancient civilizations of Hittites- the underground city. There are about 600 outside doors that lead into this marvelous city, hidden in the courtyards of surface caves. The underground city is around 85m deep and it contains stables, cellars, refectories, churches, wineries, storage rooms and more. There is also a huge room on the second floor which was a missionary school, and the rooms to the left were used as study rooms. Fringed with secret passages, corridors and tunnels, these cities weren’t intended for a permanent use, but they were made to withstand attack, and give shelter to large numbers of people, for extended period of time.

Afterwards, we will take a long and refreshing walk along the Melendiz river, through the glorious Ihlara Valley. This striking valley is actually a 100 kilometers deep canyon, which once housed more than four thousand dwellings and a hundred cave churches decorated with beautiful frescoes. It is believed that around eighty thousand people once lived in Ihlara Valley. You will be able to feel the spirit of this valley’s rich past as you walk by the vineyards, poplars and pistachio trees, with the sound of the river as a background noise. We will visit numerous churches along the river, such as KokarKilise (The Smelly Church), Purenli Seki Kilisesi (Church with the Terrace), Agacalti Kilise (Church under the Tree), and more. Frescoes in these churches are somewhat different than in other churches, as they depict scenes similar to early Syrian and Coptic churches with unusually long texts. Once the walk ends, you will have a delicious lunch in the valley.

After lunch, we will visit the impressive Selime Monastery, a rock-cut monastery in Selime village. Located at the end of Ihlara Valley.Selime Monastery is the largest religious building in Cappadocia with. It has an astonishingly spacious church, monks quarters, a huge kitchen and a stable for mules. Selime was home to many civilizations, and one of its most important aspects was its educational and military purpose. Just across the road there is also the Selime Sultan Turbesi (The Monumental Tomb) surrounded by a cemetery, which gives this unique place another sigil of authenticity.

Afterwards, we will visit the wonderful Pigeon Valley, which is one of favorite tourist attractions in Cappadocia. This lengthy valley got its name because of hundreds of pigeon houses carved into the mountain rocks. To this day it is unclear why there are so many dovecots in the valley, and why locals kept making more. Some even speculate that they used the pigeon droppings to make explosives, while others state that more plausible reason would be its use as a fertilizer. Whichever the reason was, this gorgeous valley is a sight to behold.

Our Cappadocia adventure ends and we start driving back to Marmaris.
